June 1st and 2nd I fish the Niagara ProAm event Capt. Dick Dennie and the LandingZone team. This was the 6th time we have fished this event with many levels of success, from bringing 1 fish to weigh-in (very humbling), to finishing 7th place last year with a 9 fish box. This year we were able to pinpoint some water that was producing some decent sized fish, and got program working that would put fish in the boat. We stuck to our game plan all weekend bringing 12 fish to the scales both days.
Saturday the fishing was tough for us and we worked for every bite, but we ended the day with 4 big kings, 2 mid size kings,
and rest coho. We felt confident about our box, but we had no idea how we would fair against the competition, the toughest and most competitive fishing teams on the lake. After the weigh-in was tallied team LandingZone was sitting in 2ndplace, just 2 points behind the 1st place team Yankee Troller.
Day 2 came and tournament control was only going to let us fish to 11am due to some incoming weather, and a small craft advisory to be posted at that time. We knew we would need another full box of 12 fish to maintain 2nd, and hopefully push ahead to 1st, so we decide to run some coho lures in the mix with our king program. By 8:45 we had 9 fish in the box, 2 of those being mid sized kings. The lake was starting to get rough, the king bite turned on, 10thfish was a better 13lb king. We needed to get those cohos lures out of the water and concentrate on kings. We could not get out of those cohos fast enough and by 9:15 we would box the last 2 cohos, and dump a decent fish. Just as we boxed the 12th fish, our meat rig starts going with 20lb king, which we had to throw back, and could not count for our box.
We were the 2nd team to weigh-in on day 2, so we had to wait while the rest of the teams weighed-in, grind my teeth. The one team we were watching was the Yankee Troller team, and they came in with a great box of fish, and jump 40 points ahead of us, but we maintained and finished 2nd place. A finish we are very proud of as we worked hard all weekend, and worked to put every fish in the boat.
Congrats to the Yankee Trolling team on your 1stplace finish, and better yet.. winning the West End Challenge Cup.
Now… back to fishing and charters for a while.
